Maharashtra panel recommends removal of 8 religious structures in Dharavi redevelopment
A committee appointed by the Maharashtra government to assess religious structures within the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) has submitted its first interim report. The report recommends the removal of eight religious structures and the relocation or consolidation of three others, officials said.
The report, submitted to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis last week, deals with 12 priority religious structures in Sector 1 of the project area. Of these, 11 were adjudicated, while one was excluded due to a revision in the project boundary.
According to the committee, a total of 590 religious structures have been identified across the Dharavi redevelopment area. The committee has conducted 149 hearings so far to evaluate each structure.
The Dharavi Redevelopment Project is a large-scale urban renewal initiative aimed at transforming one of Asia's largest slums. Religious structures, including temples, mosques, and churches, are being reviewed to balance redevelopment needs with the preservation of community spaces.
The committee's findings are part of a broader effort to ensure transparency and community engagement in the redevelopment process. Further reports on other sectors are expected in the coming months.
