Gurugram Waterlogging: Residents and Opposition Question Preparedness, Demand Answers
A day after heavy rain left large parts of Gurugram waterlogged and triggered massive traffic jams, residents and Opposition leaders have stepped up criticism of the Haryana government and local administration, questioning the lack of preparedness and the recurrence of the crisis every monsoon.
Videos and photographs of school buses stranded near Subhash Chowk, with children reportedly stuck inside for hours, circulated widely on social media, stirring public anger. Residents expressed frustration over the city's repeated failure to handle even moderate rainfall.
Arun Mathuria, an IT professional, posted on X: “Who buys ₹10 crore flat in Gurgaon without even looking at the basic infrastructure? Just 30 minutes of rain and the roads turn into rivers. Gurgaon feels like a bubble -- propped up by investors and NRIs pumping air into it.” Another resident, Krishan Jeena, wrote sarcastically: “Gurgaon after 10 minutes of rain: Boat kaha milegi?”
Neha, a resident for 17 years, described the situation as a moment of “grief and sheer helplessness” while stepping out to pick up her child from school. She questioned how a few hours of rain could reduce the “Millennium City” to a “stranded, chaotic nightmare”. “Nearly two decades we have paid our taxes, built our lives, and hoped for better, only to be met with the same negligence year after year,” she wrote.
Opposition leaders also targeted the BJP government over the city's recurring waterlogging problems. Former MP Brijendra Singh shared pictures of stranded school buses near Subhash Chowk and criticised Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, alleging that Gurugram and Faridabad, despite being among the State's largest and highest tax-paying urban centres, continue to suffer from poor infrastructure.
Rohtak MP Deepender Hooda criticised the administration, pointing to the city's soaring property prices and arguing that more attention should have been given to drainage infrastructure years ago. “Gurugram, where last week an entrepreneur bought a penthouse flat for ₹271 crore, if even 12 years ago such a budget had been properly allocated for rainwater drainage, we wouldn’t have to feel this ashamed in front of our next generation,” Mr. Hooda wrote.
Congress leader and former Gurugram Rural district women’s president Sheilza Bhatia said the waterlogging crisis was not new and questioned why authorities had failed to address known trouble spots. “Everyone knows where the water accumulates, which roads get blocked, and which areas are worst affected. So why does the same problem occur every year?” she asked.
She also questioned the silence of Gurugram MP Rao Inderjit Singh and sought a statement from him. “Today, Gurugram is asking you just one question—when Gurugram was drowning, where were you?” she wrote.
Former Congress Rewari MLA Chiranjeev also questioned the MP’s absence from public discourse during the crisis. Referring to Mr. Singh’s recent remarks about being allegedly humiliated after not being invited to an event, Chiranjeev said that while the MP had spoken publicly about his own humiliation, he had not commented on the plight of residents affected by the waterlogging.
Neither the Haryana government nor the Gurugram administration had issued an official response to the criticisms at the time of reporting. Residents and civic groups have called for long-term solutions, including improved drainage systems and better urban planning, to prevent a repeat of the situation.
