Madurai hospital launches advanced robotic surgery system to enhance precision care

Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital (MSSH) in Madurai has added the Toumai™ MT-1000 Pro Robotic Surgical System to its surgical programme, strengthening its capabilities in robotic-assisted procedures. The announcement was made on Thursday at a function attended by cine music director Vijay Antony and actor Prashanth Thiagarajan, along with hospital officials.

The hospital said the new system will be used for complex procedures in gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, urology, gynaecology, thoracic, breast, thyroid and paediatric surgery. Robotic-assisted surgery is a minimally invasive technique that involves a few small incisions, unlike conventional open surgery. The system is designed to enhance a surgeon's precision by providing three-dimensional visualisation and wristed instruments that help preserve vital nerves and delicate structures during complex operations.

According to doctors at the hospital, the robotic system does not function independently. Every movement is fully controlled by the surgeon from a dedicated console. The technology translates the surgeon's hand movements into precise actions while filtering natural hand tremors, enabling accuracy in delicate and difficult-to-reach areas. This is expected to contribute to safer surgeries, faster recovery and better clinical outcomes.

The Toumai™ MT-1000 Pro is among the latest-generation robotic surgical platforms and is reportedly used by medical institutions in more than 60 countries. The hospital stated that the system has been used in over 18,000 robotic procedures worldwide across multiple surgical specialities, reflecting its acceptance and clinical reliability.

Robotic surgery has been part of MSSH's services for the past decade. Chairman S. Gurushankar said, “By combining advanced robotics with the expertise of our surgeons, we aim to deliver safer surgeries, faster recovery and better clinical outcomes.” Medical Director Ramesh Ardhanari and other senior consultants were present at the inauguration.

The introduction of this system is part of a broader trend in India, where hospitals are increasingly adopting robotic-assisted technology to improve surgical precision. However, experts note that patient outcomes depend not only on the technology but also on the experience and skill of the surgical team. The hospital has emphasised that its surgeons have been trained in robotic techniques and will continue to follow established protocols to ensure patient safety.

While robotic surgery offers potential advantages such as reduced pain, shorter hospital stays and quicker return to normal activities, it is not suitable for all patients or conditions. The decision to use robotic-assisted surgery is made by the treating doctor based on an individual patient's medical condition and needs. Patients are advised to discuss all treatment options, including risks and benefits, with their surgeon before undergoing any procedure.

Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital's expansion of its robotic surgery programme is expected to benefit patients in the Madurai region and surrounding areas, potentially reducing the need for travel to larger cities for certain advanced procedures. The hospital's leadership said the focus remains on providing safe, effective and accessible surgical care.
