‘Let Cauvery unite our people’: Karnataka BJP chief urges Tamil Nadu CM to bridge differences

In a bid to ease tensions over the long-standing Cauvery water dispute, Karnataka BJP president B.Y. Vijayendra has appealed to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to work towards a harmonious resolution, saying the river should be a symbol of unity rather than conflict.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Vijayendra said, “Let Cauvery unite our people. Differences over water sharing should not be allowed to create bitterness between the two states. We must sit together and find a solution that respects the interests of farmers on both sides.”

The statement comes amid recurring friction over the release of Cauvery water from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu, a dispute that dates back to pre-independence agreements. The issue has seen periodic flare-ups, with protests and legal battles over the interpretation of water-sharing agreements and the availability of water during deficient monsoons.

The Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal had in 2007 assigned a specific share of water to each state, and the Supreme Court later modified the allocation in 2018, directing the Centre to notify a scheme for implementation. Despite this, practical difficulties in releasing water, especially in drought years, continue to trigger friction.

Vijayendra’s appeal is seen by political observers as a conciliatory gesture, though some have noted that his position as the head of the ruling party in Karnataka could also carry political weight. The Congress government in Karnataka has been in a separate tussle with Tamil Nadu over the implementation of the Cauvery management scheme, with the state consistently citing groundwater recharge and rainfall limitations.

In response, Tamil Nadu has repeatedly petitioned the Supreme Court seeking directions for Karnataka to release its due share, arguing that the state has been ignoring the mandated monthly schedule. The issue has also been raised in political rallies and social media platforms, often leading to heated exchanges between supporters of different parties across both states.

Reacting to the Karnataka BJP chief’s overture, political commentators point out that while such statements are welcome, the underlying dispute requires a more structured and cooperative approach. Both states depend heavily on the river for agriculture, and any long-term solution must factor in changing climate patterns and better water management practices.

The Centre had earlier set up a Cauvery Water Management Authority and a Regulation Committee to oversee the release of water, but states have often questioned the adequacy of these mechanisms during stress periods. The latest appeal from Vijayendra could be a step towards reviving dialogue at the political level, though no formal meeting has been announced yet.

Farmers associations in both states have expressed guarded optimism. A spokesperson for a farmers’ group in Bengaluru said, “We are tired of the endless legal battles. We hope politicians from both sides will sit together and work out a practical solution that secures the livelihood of our cultivators.”

The Cauvery issue has historically been a sensitive topic, touching upon regional identities and agrarian distress. While Vijayendra’s call for unity is a positive signal, observers note that concrete action will require the cooperation of all political parties and an understanding of the scientific realities of water availability.

Neither the Chief Minister’s office in Tamil Nadu nor the Karnataka government has officially commented on the BJP leader’s statement yet. However, sources suggest that back-channel talks may have already been initiated, though there is no official confirmation.

As the summer months approach, water levels in the Cauvery basin are expected to become a point of contention again. The hope now is that political leadership will prioritise dialogue over discord, ensuring that the river indeed becomes a bond of friendship rather than a cause of divide.
