Kolkata Airport Incident: TMC Alleges Security Lapse as Armed Person Detained Near Abhishek Banerjee
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has raised serious concerns about the security of its senior leader Abhishek Banerjee after a person was apprehended with arms at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata on Saturday night. Banerjee, the party's second-in-command, claimed the incident was an attempt to target him.
According to reports, TMC and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers clashed at the airport following the incident. The BJP denied the allegations, stating that its supporters only planned to protest by throwing eggs at Banerjee, who is the Member of Parliament from Diamond Harbour.
Police intervened, detained the individual, and escorted Banerjee through an alternative exit. No injuries were reported.
Banerjee later posted a video of the alleged incident on social media platform X, saying: “Last night at Kolkata Airport, shortly after I landed from Delhi, a shocking incident took place. Armed individuals were apprehended, leading to serious questions about security and the lengths to which some are willing to go.” He added that the story was unlikely to receive widespread coverage.
The TMC demanded a thorough investigation and enhanced security measures for its leaders. The party accused the BJP of attempting to create an atmosphere of fear. However, the BJP countered, accusing the TMC of staging an incident for political gain.
This incident comes amid heightened political tensions in West Bengal ahead of upcoming local body elections. The Kolkata Police have stated that they are investigating the matter and will take appropriate action.
