Kharge holds Amit Shah accountable for police action on student protests

Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, on Thursday held Union Home Minister Amit Shah responsible for the alleged police actions against student protesters. Speaking in the Parliament, Kharge stated that the government's prolonged silence on the issue would eventually lead to public accountability.

"The Home Minister cannot remain silent on such matters. The people's power will one day drag him out to answer for the actions of the police under his charge," Kharge said, addressing the media after his remarks in the Upper House.

Kharge's comments come amidst ongoing protests by students from various universities demanding better hostel facilities and action against rising fees. Reports of police using force to disperse demonstrations have drawn criticism from opposition parties and human rights groups.

The Home Ministry has not responded to Kharge's statements. The ministry in the past has maintained that law enforcement actions are taken to maintain public order and within legal boundaries.

Student protests have been a recurring feature in recent months, with demands ranging from academic reforms to policy changes. The opposition has accused the government of suppressing dissent, while the ruling party claims that protests are being instigated by political groups to disrupt the functioning of educational institutions.

Political analysts note that the exchange reflects the growing tension between the government and the opposition over the handling of student affairs. The issue is expected to be raised further in the upcoming parliamentary sessions.
