Kerala CM's open mic remark on Kuttanad holiday sparks row over credibility

A political controversy has erupted in the Kerala Legislative Assembly after Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan was reportedly heard making a remark through an open microphone that contradicted his earlier response to a question regarding a proposed local holiday for the Champakulam Moolam Boat Race.

The issue arose when United Democratic Front (UDF) MLA Reji Cheriyan, a member of the Kerala Congress, requested a local holiday in Kuttanad taluk for the annual boat race. In his official reply, Mr. Satheesan said the government would consider the request. However, shortly after taking his seat, the Chief Minister was allegedly heard saying through an open microphone, “under no circumstances will it be granted.” The remark was captured on video and circulated on social media by Left Democratic Front (LDF) legislators, who accused the Chief Minister of displaying contradictory positions within seconds.

Speaker Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan said he was unaware of the Chief Minister's complete remarks, as much of the interaction was off the record. He added that such remarks would be out of character for the Chief Minister, who generally responds positively to requests. Mr. Cheriyan expressed hope that the government would ultimately declare a local holiday.

The controversy has placed the Kerala Congress, an important UDF ally, in a delicate position. Water Resources Minister and senior party leader Mons Joseph declined to comment on the matter, stating that discussions held in the House should not become the subject of public debate. He said any examination should be done through proper channels and parliamentary procedures.

Organisers of the Champakulam Moolam Boat Race expressed disappointment, saying the Chief Minister's remarks had caused concern among people in Kuttanad. They urged the government to recognise the cultural importance of the centuries-old event and declare a local holiday. Preparations for Monday's race have entered the final stage, with fifteen boats expected to participate, including iconic snake boats.

The political row intensified after CPI(M) State secretary M.V. Govindan accused Mr. Satheesan of displaying a pattern of contradictory positions, alleging it reflected his “true political character.” CPI(M) MLA K.U. Jenish Kumar accused the Chief Minister of misleading the Assembly.
