Kerala bus stop tragedy: Speeding tipper kills 3 students, injures several others

In a tragic accident that occurred on Tuesday morning, June 23, 2026, three students were killed and several others injured when a speeding tipper lorry crashed into a bus stop in Nileshwaram, Kottarakara, in Kollam district, Kerala. The lorry, heavily loaded with sand, lost control and overturned, dumping its load onto commuters waiting at the bus stop.

According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle was travelling at an excessive speed before the driver lost control. The tipper struck a wall near the bus stop, overturned, and buried several people under a thick pile of sand. Victims were waiting for a bus at the time of the accident.

Local residents and Fire and Rescue Services personnel rushed to the spot and launched an intensive rescue operation. The driver of the tipper lorry also sustained serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. It is reported that around ten people, including seven children, were at the bus stop when the accident occurred.

Rescue teams are clearing debris and digging through the sand to ensure no one else is trapped. The incident has caused deep grief in the community, and authorities have announced an investigation into the cause of the accident. Strict action will be taken against those responsible, officials said.
