Kerala braces for heavy rain: IMD issues orange alert for Kannur, Kasaragod

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Kannur and Kasaragod districts on Monday, June 29, 2026. An orange alert indicates the possibility of very heavy rainfall ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours.

For Tuesday, the orange alert extends to Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod, while on Wednesday, it remains in place for Kannur and Kasaragod. Yellow alerts have been issued for several other districts across the state. A yellow alert signifies heavy rainfall of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm in 24 hours.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has advised residents in areas prone to landslides, mudslides, and flash floods, as well as those living along riverbanks and downstream of dams, to move to safer locations if instructed by authorities. The public is urged to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from rivers, waterfalls, and other water bodies, refrain from crossing flooded areas, and avoid hill stations and other vulnerable locations until the weather improves.

The KSDMA confirmed that district and taluk control rooms are functioning round the clock. For assistance, people can contact the toll-free emergency numbers 1077 and 1070.
