Ireland Head Coach Heinrich Malan Resigns Day After Historic India Series Sweep

Heinrich Malan, the head coach of the Ireland men's cricket team, resigned on Monday, less than 24 hours after leading his side to a historic 2-0 T20 International series victory over India in Belfast.

Ireland defeated the reigning World Cup champions India by 34 runs in the first match and followed it with a thrilling one-run win in the second game on Sunday to complete a clean sweep. The series win is considered one of the greatest achievements in Irish cricket history.

Malan, a 45-year-old South African, was appointed head coach in 2022 and later signed an extension that was set to keep him in the role until 2027. However, he decided to step away with immediate effect, months before his contract's expiry.

During his tenure, Malan oversaw a successful period for Ireland. The team qualified for three consecutive T20 World Cups and secured Ireland's first three Test match victories. His resignation comes at a time when Irish cricket is on an upward trajectory.

Cricket Ireland has not yet announced an interim or permanent replacement for Malan. The board expressed gratitude for his contributions and said it would begin the search for a new head coach shortly.
