Kochi Tahsildar, Two Agents Held for ₹10 Lakh Bribe in Land Deal
In a significant anti-corruption operation, Vigilance officials in Kochi arrested a tahsildar and two of his associates for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹10 lakh. The accused have been identified as tahsildar Joseph Antony and his two agents. The arrest was made from Kadavanthra in the city.
According to officials, the bribe was sought from a person who wanted to transfer the title deed of his land. The complainant had approached the tahsildar's office for the transfer, and the accused allegedly demanded the money to facilitate the process. Following a tip-off, the Vigilance team laid a trap and caught the trio red-handed while accepting the bribe.
The tahsildar is a revenue official at the taluk level responsible for land records, collection of land revenue, and other administrative duties. The position holds significant authority in matters related to land ownership and transfers, which sometimes makes it vulnerable to corrupt practices.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges in ensuring transparency in land administration. The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) has been actively pursuing such cases across Kerala. In recent years, several officials have been booked on similar charges, reflecting a broader push for accountability.
The arrested individuals have been taken into custody and will be produced before a court. Legal proceedings are expected to commence soon. The exact role of the two agents in the alleged transaction is also under investigation. According to the complaint, they acted as intermediaries between the complainant and the tahsildar.
Under the Prevention of Corruption Act, accepting bribes can lead to imprisonment and fines. If found guilty, the accused could face severe penalties. The case also brings attention to the need for systemic reforms in land-related departments to reduce human discretion and increase digitisation.
Meanwhile, officials have urged citizens to report any instances of corruption to the Vigilance department. They have assured that complaints will be handled confidentially and prompt action will be taken against those found guilty. The department also encourages the use of technology for filing complaints and tracking progress.
The arrest has sent a strong message that corrupt practices in government offices will not be tolerated. As the investigation continues, more details are likely to emerge about the extent of the alleged wrongdoing and any prior instances involving the accused.
Residents of the area expressed shock at the incident, while also appreciating the Vigilance department's effort in nabbing the culprits. Many believe that such actions are essential to restore public faith in the administration.
The case is a reminder that accountability is crucial in public service. With the Vigilance department stepping up its operations, it is hoped that such corrupt practices will be curbed effectively.
