Coast Guard marks 50 years with 1,000 safety drives along Andhra Pradesh coast

As part of its golden jubilee celebrations, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has intensified coastal security and fishermen safety efforts in Andhra Pradesh by organising nearly 1,000 Community Interaction Programmes (CIPs) across the State during 2025–26. The initiative has directly engaged more than 25,000 fishermen, according to an official statement released on Thursday.

The programmes, conducted in coordination with the Andhra Pradesh State Fisheries Department, Marine Police, and district administrations, aim to raise awareness on maritime safety, search and rescue procedures, and sustainable fishing practices. Covering the entire 1,050-km coastline of the State, the campaign educates fishermen on critical safety measures, including the mandatory use of life jackets, communication equipment, and emergency distress devices.

A central feature of these interactions is the promotion of the ICG's toll-free emergency number 1554, which ensures rapid response during distress situations at sea. Fishermen have also been sensitised to the ecological and economic importance of the annual fishing ban, which protects breeding grounds and supports long-term livelihoods for coastal communities.

The ICG said the enthusiastic participation of the fishing community has improved information sharing and strengthened coastal surveillance. Demonstrations on first aid, cyclone preparedness, and safe navigation were also part of the sessions, aimed at building a more resilient and security-conscious coastal ecosystem.

Looking ahead, the ICG plans to expand these engagements across all coastal districts, with a sharper focus on digital weather awareness and involving youth in fishing villages. The service hopes to transform every fisherman into an informed partner in safeguarding lives and protecting the nation's maritime frontiers, upholding its motto, Vayam Rakshamah (We Protect), the release added.
