Indra Nooyi’s remarks on India, US meritocracy stir debate online

Former PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi has sparked discussion on social media after sharing her views on India, China, and the United States during a recent conversation about leadership and meritocracy.

In widely circulated video clips, Nooyi described India as a place of “chaos” that may seem “impossible” to visitors who prefer clean, orderly living, while noting that China is “relatively homogenous” and easier to navigate. She also said that she could never have become CEO in India, attributing her success to the meritocratic system in the United States.

Commenting on her experiences visiting India and China, Nooyi said: “China is relatively homogenous. It’s easier to spend time in China than India as a visitor. India is going to be impossible if you like clean, orderly living. The beauty of India is in its chaos. If you like chaos, you go back.” She added that everyday scenes on Indian streets, such as cows walking through traffic, are part of a rhythm that locals instinctively understand.

Regarding her career, Nooyi stated: “I could never have become CEO in any other country in the world, including in India… It’s because the system here in America is a meritocratic system. It’s because the mentors here don’t care if you’re male or female… they just want the best brains to rise to the top.” She credited the American system for allowing her to advance based on her abilities.

Nooyi also praised China’s centrally driven governance model for rapidly transforming the country, while noting that India’s democratic progress is slower but preferable. “I respect the Chinese system for pulling China out of the dark ages. It became a world power because they did it centrally. India is still struggling to be a world power because democracy rules and progress is slow. But I am glad it is a democracy,” she said.

The clips have drawn a wide range of reactions online. Some users appreciated her frank perspective, while others felt her comparisons were overly broad. One user wrote, “With due respect to her, would like to point out that she was a bit fortunate to have lived in an old America.” Another questioned, “So she wants to say that all the CEO or the person holding a top position in India doesn’t have merit? What an absurd statement.” Others defended her right to express her views based on personal experience.

Nooyi, who served as PepsiCo’s CEO from 2006 to 2018, is one of the most prominent Indian-origin business leaders globally. Her remarks have reignited discussions about meritocracy, governance, and cultural differences between nations.
