Indian Seafarer Killed in Black Sea Attack; Second Incident in Days
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed the death of an Indian seafarer following an attack on a commercial vessel in the Black Sea. The incident occurred on July 18, when the merchant vessel MV Omorfi was reportedly transiting Russian territorial waters.
The MEA stated that the vessel had 10 crew members on board, including three Indian nationals. One Indian was killed in the attack. The ministry did not disclose the identities of the deceased or the other crew members.
This attack comes just days after another incident on July 19, when the vessel MV Golden Leo was struck off the coast of Ukraine, killing four Indians among 10 people on board. In response to that incident, India summoned the Russian Charge d'affaires on Tuesday to register its protest.
The MEA is in touch with relevant authorities to ascertain further details and ensure the safety of Indian nationals in the region. The Black Sea has seen increased maritime tensions due to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
