Indian-Origin PhD Student Vikram Mubayi Found Dead After California Hike
Vikram Mubayi, an Indian-origin doctoral student at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), has been found dead after he went missing during a solo hiking trip in California's Big Pine Lakes area. Authorities confirmed that his body was recovered from the Inyo National Forest on the evening of August 3.
Mubayi, a PhD student in the Department of Chemical Engineering at UCSB, last contacted his family at around 8:30 pm on August 1, sharing his GPS coordinates while on the trail. When he did not return as scheduled and stopped communicating, his family reported him missing. Inyo County Search and Rescue and the California Highway Patrol launched a search operation, which led to the recovery of his body after a two-day effort.
Investigators have not disclosed the cause of death, according to the student publication Daily Nexus, which first reported the incident. There has been no indication of foul play, and the circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation.
Born and raised in Hong Kong, Mubayi was described by his family in a Reddit post as a "fairly experienced hiker." In a self-written biography on the website of Illini 4000, a student-led non-profit organisation, he said his mother got him "into hiking and tennis pretty much as soon as I learned how to walk." He also described himself as someone who loved sports and being outdoors, and as an avid cyclist.
Mubayi graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 2022 with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. During his undergraduate years, he worked as a teaching assistant and as a research assistant at the Burke Laboratory.
At UCSB, he was pursuing a PhD and conducting research on bacteria and biological methods to break down plant waste and plastics. His goal, according to his LinkedIn profile, was to develop sustainable alternatives to petroleum.
The Big Pine Lakes area, where the incident occurred, is a rugged and remote part of the Sierra Nevada range. It is known for its alpine lakes and challenging hiking trails. Hikers are advised to be prepared for sudden weather changes and difficult terrain, especially when travelling solo.
The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to be released by the authorities as they become available.
