India to Fence Entire Myanmar Border at Rs 31,000 Crore, Says Amit Shah
Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Thursday that the government is fencing the entire 1,610-kilometre India-Myanmar border at a cost of Rs 31,000 crore. Speaking at the Land Border District Superintendents of Police Conference 2026 in New Delhi, Shah emphasised the government's commitment to curbing what he described as abnormal demographic changes caused by illegal infiltration.
Shah stated that India's border security system, based on the Centre's 'smart border' vision, would become among the most modern in the world in the coming years. He called for a shift from isolated border outposts to an integrated security grid to better manage the border.
The Home Minister identified illegal infiltration as the primary driver of demographic changes in border areas, adding that the government is determined to address this issue. The fencing project is intended to prevent unauthorised movement across the border, which has been a longstanding concern for security agencies.
The India-Myanmar border spans four states: Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram. The region has seen significant movement of people due to ethnic ties and conflict in Myanmar. The government's decision to fence the border comes amid broader efforts to tighten security along India's international boundaries.
Shah did not provide a timeline for the completion of the fencing but stressed the importance of modernising border infrastructure. The conference, attended by senior police officials from land border districts, focused on enhancing coordination between central and state agencies.
