India, Japan Defence Ministers to Discuss Roadmap for Deeper Strategic Ties
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will hold a bilateral meeting with his Japanese counterpart, Shinjiro Koizumi, in New Delhi on Thursday (August 20, 2026). The two sides are expected to discuss measures to further strengthen defence and security cooperation and enhance strategic trust in the Indo-Pacific region.
According to the Ministry of Defence, the Ministers are likely to exchange views on deepening maritime security cooperation and enhancing collaboration in defence equipment and technology under the 'Make in India' framework. This comes in the backdrop of Japan's recent revision of its Three Principles on Transfer of Defence Equipment and Technology, which opens new avenues for joint production and technology sharing.
The meeting is also expected to identify new areas of collaboration and prepare a roadmap for advancing bilateral defence and security cooperation. Both countries share a vision of a free, open, resilient and prosperous Indo-Pacific, and this engagement is seen as a step towards translating that vision into concrete action.
Koizumi, who is on his maiden visit to India, visited the Western Naval Command in Mumbai on Wednesday (August 19, 2026). He held discussions with Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan and Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command, Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan. The Japanese Defence Minister was briefed on the roles, responsibilities and operational capabilities of the Indian Navy. He inspected a Guard of Honour at the Western Naval Command and laid a wreath at the Gaurav Stambh at the Naval Dockyard. He also visited INS Chennai, an indigenously built guided-missile destroyer.
The two-day visit underscores the growing momentum in India-Japan defence ties. It comes weeks after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's visit to New Delhi for the Annual Summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where the two sides agreed to deepen defence and security cooperation. The upcoming ministerial meeting is expected to further consolidate the strategic partnership, particularly in the maritime and defence technology domains.
Analysts note that the India-Japan defence relationship has been steadily expanding, driven by shared concerns over maritime security in the Indo-Pacific and a mutual interest in maintaining a rules-based order. Japan's decision to revise its defence equipment transfer guidelines is expected to facilitate greater cooperation in areas such as unmanned systems, cyber defence and submarine rescue capabilities.
The meeting between Rajnath Singh and Shinjiro Koizumi is likely to set the tone for enhanced defence industrial collaboration, with both nations exploring opportunities for co-development and co-production under India's indigenisation drive. The outcomes of the talks are expected to be closely watched by regional stakeholders, given the strategic implications for the Indo-Pacific balance of power.
