India, Australia Push for De-escalation as West Asia Tensions Mount and China Tests Missile
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese have jointly called for restraint and dialogue amid escalating tensions in West Asia and a recent missile test by China. The two leaders, speaking at a virtual summit, emphasised the need for peaceful resolution of conflicts and adherence to international law.
The call for peace comes after a flare-up in hostilities between Israel and Iran-backed groups, and a Chinese intercontinental ballistic missile test in the Pacific Ocean. Both developments have raised concerns about regional stability and the potential for wider conflict.
Modi and Albanese reaffirmed their commitment to a rules-based international order, with Albanese noting that “dialogue and diplomacy must prevail.” They also discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation in defence, trade, and technology. The summit highlighted the growing strategic partnership between India and Australia, both members of the Quad grouping.
China’s missile test, which landed in international waters, drew criticism from several countries. India has traditionally advocated for a peaceful and stable Indo-Pacific region. Meanwhile, West Asia tensions have prompted global calls for de-escalation to avoid a broader war.
The joint appeal by the two leaders is seen as a moderate and constructive step, reflecting their shared interest in regional peace. Analysts say it underscores the importance of multilateral engagement in addressing global security challenges.
