India Aims for 'Ocean of Opportunity' in Indian Ocean, PM Modi Declares in Seychelles
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his three-day state visit to Seychelles, outlined India's vision for the Indian Ocean as a region of shared prosperity and security. Speaking at a joint press address with Seychelles President Wavel Ramkalawan, Modi stated, 'Our vision is to make the Indian Ocean an Ocean of Opportunity.'
Modi emphasized that this vision includes ensuring maritime security alongside economic prosperity, with partnerships based on mutual respect and trust rather than the size of nations. The statement came after delegation-level talks between the two leaders, during which they reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral cooperation and exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual interest.
During the visit, Prime Minister Modi was conferred with the 'Guardian of the Blue Horizon' award, recognizing his leadership in maritime security and environmental conservation in the Indian Ocean region. The award highlights the growing strategic partnership between India and Seychelles, both of which are key players in the Indian Ocean Rim Association.
India has long sought to enhance its presence in the Indian Ocean, viewing it as critical to its economic and security interests. The region is a vital trade route for energy and goods, and New Delhi has been working to counterbalance China's growing influence. Modi's remarks reaffirm India's commitment to a rules-based maritime order and sustainable development.
The visit also saw the signing of several agreements, including in defence, tourism, and renewable energy. Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the progress of ongoing projects, such as the development of an airstrip on Assumption Island, which will enhance maritime surveillance capabilities.
Observers note that Modi's rhetoric of 'Ocean of Opportunity' is aimed at fostering a cooperative environment where small island nations like Seychelles can benefit from India's economic growth and security assurances, without being overshadowed by larger powers.
