IIT Kanpur Admits 14 Students via Olympiad Route, Bypassing JEE Advanced
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has admitted 14 students to its undergraduate engineering and science programmes through a special Olympiad quota, allowing them to join without appearing for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced.
A total of 17 candidates were shortlisted after the application process concluded on June 15. They appeared for a computer-based test (CBT) on June 24 at the IIT Kanpur campus. Of these, one candidate did not take the test, and two others have been placed on a waiting list based on their performance.
The selected students will begin their studies at IIT Kanpur for the 2026-27 academic session.
Entrance Test Details
The three-hour admission test comprised 45 questions — 15 each from Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
Among the successful candidates:
- Six have been admitted to Computer Science and Engineering.
- Two have secured places in Biological Sciences and Bioengineering.
- The remaining students have been offered seats in Mathematics, Intelligent Systems, Chemistry, and Data Science-related programmes.
What is the Olympiad Scheme?
The Olympiad Scheme is a special admission route introduced by IIT Kanpur for students who have excelled in recognised national and international Olympiad competitions. Under this scheme, eligible candidates gain admission to select undergraduate programmes without needing to take JEE Advanced. The initiative aims to attract talented students with strong foundations in science and mathematics.
Admissions through this route are available in five departments: Computer Science and Engineering, Biological Sciences and Bioengineering, Chemistry, Economic Sciences, and Mathematics and Statistics.
Eligibility Criteria
To apply under the Olympiad Scheme, candidates must meet specific criteria set by the institute, including performance benchmarks in Olympiad examinations as prescribed by IIT Kanpur.
