Hyderabad Names Road After Trump, He Says It's a First for a US President
Former US President Donald Trump expressed gratitude after a road in Hyderabad, India, was renamed in his honour. The Telangana government officially designated a road near the US Consulate in the southern Indian city as 'Donald Trump Avenue'.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social on Friday, Trump acknowledged the gesture, stating that he is the first US President to receive such an honour in India. 'The new Donald Trump Avenue in Hyderabad, India -- The first US President to ever be honoured in this way. Thank you,' he wrote, sharing a photograph of the ceremonial plaque unveiling.
The plaque was unveiled earlier this week by Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and US Envoy to India Sergio Gor. The road is located in a prominent area of Hyderabad, close to the offices of major American technology firms, including Microsoft, Google, and Amazon.
The Telangana government described the naming as a tribute to the United States and a recognition of Hyderabad's growing role in US-India relations. Officials noted that the road's proximity to the US Consulate and tech hubs symbolises the strengthening ties between the two countries.
The move has drawn mixed reactions locally, with some welcoming the gesture as a diplomatic goodwill measure, while others questioned the timing and rationale. However, state authorities maintained that the decision was taken to honour the longstanding partnership between India and the United States, and to highlight Hyderabad's emergence as a global technology and business destination.
This is not the first time a location in India has been named after a foreign leader. Previous instances include roads and landmarks named after figures such as Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr. However, Trump is the first sitting or former US President to have a road named after him in India.
The development comes amid ongoing political events in the US, where Trump is a candidate for the 2024 presidential election. The Telangana government stated that the naming was not intended to endorse any political figure or party, but rather to acknowledge the broader US-India relationship.
Hyderabad has long been a hub for US companies, with many establishing large offices in the city's technology corridors. The newly named Donald Trump Avenue runs through an area that houses several such firms, further cementing the city's reputation as a key partner in bilateral trade and investment.
As of now, the US Consulate in Hyderabad has not issued an official statement on the road renaming. The plaque ceremony was attended by local officials and representatives from the US diplomatic mission.
