How a Facebook suicide alert triggered a 20-minute police chase to save a Noida truck driver
On June 30, a 38-year-old truck driver from Greater Noida left his home in distress after a domestic dispute with his wife over their married daughter. Before driving off, he uploaded a video on Facebook and Instagram declaring his intention to end his life.
The video triggered automated safety alerts at Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram. Within minutes, Meta forwarded the alerts to the Uttar Pradesh Police, setting off an urgent operation to locate and rescue the driver.
At 10:57 am, Meta sent an email alert about the post to the Social Media Centre at the Uttar Pradesh Police headquarters. The Director General of Police ordered immediate action to trace the man's location. Real-time coordinates were shared with the Gautam Buddha Nagar Commissionerate's media cell, and police officers were dispatched to intercept the truck.
Responding officers located the truck after a 20-minute chase and found the driver in severe emotional distress. They convinced him to stop and provided assistance, ensuring his safety. The driver was later taken to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation and counselling.
This incident highlights the role of technology and inter-agency coordination in suicide prevention. The prompt action by Meta's safety systems and the swift response by the police saved a life, underscoring the importance of timely alerts in crisis situations.
