Telangana hydel generation stays low despite July floods; power demand surges
In July 2026, power distribution utilities in Telangana expected relief from daily energy purchases on the Indian Energy Exchange, in addition to power purchase agreements. However, that relief was short-lived as the significant flood that raised hopes lasted barely two weeks.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) data shows that 15 of the 32 rural districts in the state received deficient rainfall, ranging from 21% to 47% below normal. This deficit, compounded by below-expected inflows into major reservoirs due to El Nino conditions, has hit the farming community and made the first crop (Kharif) uncertain. At the same time, it has put a heavy load on the transmission system and pushed energy demand to unexpected levels for the season.
Despite the rainfall deficit, sowing and transplantation of Kharif crops has exceeded 107.17 lakh acres. Cotton, with 47.72 lakh acres, and paddy, with 41.54 lakh acres, account for the lion's share. Redgram, maize, soybean, and greengram have been sown in another 15.03 lakh acres, as farmers prefer irrigated-dry crops to rain-fed ones. Sugarcane, blackgram, and jowar cover over one lakh acres, according to Agriculture Department officials.
The stress on power utilities has been increasing despite a brief revival of monsoon rains for a couple of weeks. With dry spells returning, energy demand and transmission load have risen. TG-Genco authorities report that the peak load was between 15,000 and 16,000 MW for 10 days in July. In August, it has been between 15,000 and 17,000 MW for 12 out of the first 15 days.
Energy demand from all consumer categories, particularly agriculture for groundwater pumping, has also climbed. Hydel generation, which usually contributes significantly from July to September, has remained nominal. A Genco official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “Despite scanty rainfall in the state, we expected good flood from upstream states to enable ample hydel generation. But the sizeable flood lasted only about a fortnight, and only 86 million units (MU) of hydel energy was possible in July against total consumption of 8,238 MU.” In the first 15 days of August, hydel contributed 199 MU out of 4,359 MU consumed.
Major reservoirs still have over 300 tmc ft of flood cushion, but prospects for irrigation under these projects remain uncertain. Only a heavy, sustained flow of inflows can bring relief to both farmers and power utilities.
