Himachal on Orange Alert: Heavy Rain Threatens Schools for 5 Days
Heavy rainfall lashed parts of Himachal Pradesh's Kangra and Chamba districts on Saturday, prompting the Shimla Meteorological Centre to issue an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rains from July 19 to 23. The alert covers isolated places across the state, with warnings of thunderstorms and lightning.
According to the Met department, Jot in Chamba recorded 109 mm of rain since Friday evening, followed by Kangra with 77.4 mm and Palampur with 38 mm. The orange alert remains in effect for July 19 to 22, while a warning for heavy rain has been issued for July 23.
Although no official school closure orders have been announced yet, the extended rain alert has led to speculation that districts may preemptively shut schools to ensure student safety. In previous similar weather events, local authorities have often declared holidays or shifted to online classes. Parents and school administrations are advised to stay updated with district-level announcements.
The state government has not issued a formal statement regarding closures. However, the meteorological department advises residents to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in landslide-prone areas, and to remain cautious near rivers and streams that may swell due to the downpour.
