Heavy Rain Wreaks Havoc in Gurgaon: School Bus Rescued, Roads Cave In

Gurgaon experienced severe waterlogging and infrastructure failures on Tuesday as heavy rain lashed the city, causing a school bus to sink into a caved-in road and disrupting traffic across several key corridors. The district recorded up to 82 mm of rainfall between 2 pm and 5 pm, leading to flooding in areas such as Sheetla Mata Road, the newly laid master road in Sector 102, and upscale residential colonies like Mayfield Gardens (Sector 51) and Ardee City (Sector 52).

According to officials, a school bus carrying children sank into a pit that had formed on a road near Sector 53 around 2 pm. The bus was dropping students home after school. Sanitation workers and police personnel worked for nearly an hour to extricate the vehicle, and no injuries were reported.

In a separate incident, a section of the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway at Narsinghpur caved in, forcing traffic police to divert vehicles via the Dwarka Expressway and Southern Peripheral Road. This caused significant delays. Waterlogging also affected Civil Lines Road, near the residence of Gurgaon Deputy Commissioner and Haryana Minister Rao Narbir Singh.

Residents expressed frustration over the city's infrastructure. Chaitali Mandhotra of Ardee City said, “Thank you Municipal Corporation of Gurugram for cleaning the funds and not the drains.” Ruchika Sethi of Nirvana Country added, “Gurgaon is one of the country’s biggest revenue generators, yet it is being viewed only as an investment destination without matching investment in safe, functional infrastructure. People shouldn’t have to fear dangerous roads and flooded streets every monsoon.”

The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) stated that its teams were deployed to clear water using pumps and suction tankers. A spokesperson claimed that “due to better drainage connectivity and systems, the clearance of rainwater remained smooth in many places.”

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said the road cave-in on NH-48 occurred where the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) was carrying out pipe culvert works. NHAI closed two lanes as a precaution and said GMDA had begun restoration. A GMDA spokesperson acknowledged “temporary water accumulation” at Sheetla Mata Road and the Mayfield Gardens–Sispal Vihar stretch, adding that teams were deployed for flood relief and corrective measures.

The heavy rain and resulting disruptions highlight ongoing concerns about urban planning and infrastructure resilience in Gurgaon, which has seen rapid development.
