Gunshots in New York's Times Square, one hospitalised, suspect pursued
New York, June 18 (News Agency) — Multiple gunshots were fired in Times Square, a busy tourist area in Manhattan, on Thursday afternoon, causing bystanders to take cover. Police said a suspect was quickly chased down by officers on patrol.
The New York Fire Department confirmed that one person was taken to a hospital. No additional details about the individual's condition were released.
The incident occurred at around 3:40 pm local time, shortly after a parade for the NBA champion New York Knicks had concluded. Earlier, 10,000 police officers had been deployed to secure the victory celebration for the team's first championship in 53 years.
A webcam video shows two individuals in dark clothing entering the crowded intersection and firing what appear to be handguns. Bystanders are seen moving away or seeking cover as the suspects flee down the street, pursued by several police officers. The shooting took place near a parked police vehicle.
Last weekend, a 17-year-old was shot in the same area, according to police, during celebrations of the Knicks' final win over San Antonio. Police transported the victim to hospital because an ambulance could not navigate through the crowds.
Authorities have not yet released a motive or identified the suspect. The investigation is ongoing.
