Gujarat Unveils First Data Centre Policy: Targets ₹6 Lakh Crore Investment, 7.5 GW Capacity
The Gujarat government on Thursday (July 9, 2026) launched its first Data Centre Policy (2026-29), aiming to position the state as a preferred destination for hyperscale data centres, cloud computing, and AI-driven digital infrastructure. The policy targets investments of ₹6 lakh crore and the creation of 7.5 GW of data centre capacity over three years.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel unveiled the policy in Gandhinagar. It offers fiscal and non-fiscal incentives including capital subsidy, interest subsidy, power tariff support, reimbursement of State GST (SGST), exemption from stamp duty and registration charges, and financial assistance for captive desalination plants to meet high water requirements.
Officials said the policy aims to help Gujarat compete with established data centre hubs such as Telangana, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu. Chief Secretary M.K. Das stated, 'Gujarat is the first state to bring this policy. We are confident it will attract investments of ₹6 lakh crore, create 7.5 GW of data centre capacity and generate significant employment.'
Science and Technology Secretary P. Bharati highlighted the opportunity, noting that India generates nearly 20% of the world's data but accounts for only about 3% of global data centre capacity. He said Gujarat would soon have two operational cable landing stations to strengthen international connectivity.
Science and Technology Minister Arjun Modhwadia said the state has received proposals for data centres with a combined capacity of 10 GW, with the government planning to facilitate development of around 8 GW. He noted that India currently has around 200 data centres with 2-3 GW capacity, compared to 5,500 in the United States and 500 in the United Kingdom.
The Dholera region is expected to be a key focus for data centre development under the policy.
