Five arrested for alleged gangrape in Bengaluru; police probe ongoing
Bengaluru, India – Five men have been arrested by the Talaghattapura police in connection with an alleged gangrape of a young woman in Maruthi Nagar, south Bengaluru. The incident came to light after the victim alerted the emergency helpline, leading to swift police action.
According to the police, the 23-year-old victim, a resident of Devanahalli, received a phone call from the prime accused, identified as Amaresh, around 5 p.m. on Friday. Another accused, Somashekhar, who works for a private security agency, allegedly conveyed that his friends from Kalaburagi wanted to meet her. The woman, who was acquainted with two of the accused, reached the location around 7 p.m. by a bike taxi.
The police stated that the group spent time together and consumed alcohol before the alleged assault. The victim is suspected to have been drugged and was allegedly raped. During the incident, Amaresh is accused of raping the woman. The role of the other four accused is under investigation.
The victim managed to free herself and immediately dialled the 112 emergency helpline. A police patrol team arrived swiftly, rescued the woman, and apprehended all five accused at the scene. The arrested individuals include Amaresh, Somashekhar, and three others whose names have not been released pending further inquiry.
The victim was taken to a hospital for medical examination. The Talaghattapura police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. The accused are being questioned, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the sequence of events and the specific role of each suspect.
Police officials confirmed that final charges will be determined based on the victim’s statement, medical evidence, and findings from the ongoing investigation. No further details have been disclosed to protect the victim’s identity and ensure a fair trial.
