Farmer leaders, Delhi CM join Sonam Wangchuk’s climate protest at Jantar Mantar
New Delhi: Around 500 farmers and activists gathered at Jantar Mantar on Tuesday to support climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s ongoing protest, which he has termed the ‘Climate Jamboree for Peace’ (CJP). The event drew prominent political figures including farmer leader Rakesh Tikait and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who addressed the crowd and expressed solidarity with Wangchuk’s demands.
Wangchuk, who hails from Ladakh, has been on a hunger strike since September 6, calling for the protection of fragile Himalayan ecosystems, sustainable development, and the rights of indigenous communities. The protest has gained momentum over the past week, with supporters from various states joining in. Tikait, a key figure in the 2020-21 farmers’ protest, assured Wangchuk of the farmers’ backing and emphasised the link between climate justice and agrarian distress.
Kejriwal, in his address, criticised the central government for ignoring environmental concerns and promised to raise the issue in the Delhi Assembly. He also urged the administration to engage in dialogue with Wangchuk. The protest site remained packed throughout the day, with participants holding placards and chanting slogans.
The police maintained a heavy presence to ensure law and order. No untoward incident was reported. Wangchuk’s demands include a comprehensive climate action plan for the Himalayas and stricter enforcement of environmental laws. The protest is expected to continue until the government responds.
