EU awards record 75 Erasmus+ scholarships to Indian students, launches new Ambassador Network
The European Union has awarded 75 Indian students the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) scholarship for the 2026–2028 academic cycle. This recognition reaffirms India's position as the top recipient of this scholarship since 2004, and it is now among the top three countries globally for this year's intake.
According to EU data, India currently has close to one lakh (100,000) students pursuing higher education across Europe. The Erasmus Mundus programme is designed to foster academic excellence and cross-cultural understanding by supporting joint master's programmes offered by consortia of European universities.
Alongside the scholarship announcement, the EU launched the EU-India Student Ambassadors’ Network. This network brings together 40 student ambassadors from 20 universities across 14 states and union territories in India. Its goal is to raise awareness of European academic and research opportunities while strengthening people-to-people ties between Indian and European youth.
The ambassadors will organise events, share information, and act as bridges between students in India and European institutions. The initiative is expected to further boost academic collaboration between India and the EU, which has been growing steadily over the past two decades.
The EU remains committed to supporting educational exchanges as a key pillar of its strategic partnership with India. The new network is seen as a step towards deepening these ties and encouraging more Indian students to explore study and research opportunities in Europe.
