Eknath Shinde Warns of More Defections, Calls Recent Exodus a 'Trailer'
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has issued a veiled warning to the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction, led by Uddhav Thackeray, stating that the recent departure of six of its Lok Sabha members is only the beginning of further defections. In a statement to the media, Shinde said, 'This is just a trailer, the picture is yet to come,' indicating that more legislators may leave the Thackeray-led faction.
The six MPs—Rahul Shewale, Shrikant Shinde, Hemant Godse, Krupal Tumane, Rajan Vichare, and Bhavana Gawali—switched allegiance to Shinde's faction earlier this week, dealing a blow to Shiv Sena (UBT) ahead of upcoming elections. Shinde, who led a rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray in June 2022 that split the party, claimed that his faction's strength is growing while the rival faction is losing its support base.
Shinde criticized the opposition's tactics and reiterated his commitment to Hindutva, asserting that his party has gained significant strength since the split. He framed the defections as a reflection of the growing appeal of his leadership and the policies of the ruling coalition in Maharashtra.
The political landscape in Maharashtra remains volatile, with the Shiv Sena (UBT) seeking to consolidate its hold on its remaining cadre. The defections underscore the ongoing realignment of political forces in the state, which has seen significant shifts since the 2019 assembly elections and the subsequent formation of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government, which collapsed after Shinde's revolt.
Shinde's comments have drawn sharp reactions from the Thackeray camp, which accused him of destabilizing the party for personal power. Meanwhile, political analysts suggest that the desertion of MPs could weaken Shiv Sena (UBT) further, though the long-term impact remains uncertain.
