Eight Arrested After Protest Outside Falta Police Station; Attempt to Free Detainee Thwarted

Falta, West Bengal: Tensions escalated in the Falta area of South 24 Parganas district on Tuesday when a large group assembled outside the local police station demanding the release of Jahangir Khan, a local strongman with alleged criminal affiliations, who had been arrested a day earlier. The West Bengal Police have confirmed that eight individuals were taken into custody in connection with the protest, which they say was an organised attempt to storm the station and free Khan.

Khan, who had contested assembly elections earlier this year but withdrew his candidature days before repolling, was arrested from Panitanki in Darjeeling district on June 8. He faces multiple charges, including kidnapping, extortion, and involvement in political violence. These cases were registered after a change in the state administration, though the exact political context remains a subject of contention between parties.

According to police officials, intelligence gathered before the protest indicated that a mob, reportedly led by Khan’s wife, planned to lay siege to the police station. “We had prior information and deployed additional forces, including women personnel, to handle the situation. The crowd used women and children as shields, but we managed to prevent any breach,” a senior officer said. The police resorted to a lathicharge to disperse the protesters, and several individuals were seen diving into water bodies to evade arrest. Video footage of the incident has been widely shared.

An FIR has been lodged against Khan’s wife, alleging she orchestrated the gathering with the intent to use force to free her husband. She is yet to be arrested, and police say investigations are ongoing.

The incident drew sharp reactions from political figures. Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly and a senior BJP leader, condemned the attack on security forces. Speaking at a public event, Adhikari stated, “Those who attacked the police and paramilitary forces will not be spared. I have directed the superintendent of police to take strict action.” It is important to note that as Leader of Opposition, Adhikari does not hold executive authority over the police force, which is under the control of the state home department led by the ruling Trinamool Congress. Nevertheless, he asserted that properties of those involved could be confiscated and auctioned, though this would require legal proceedings.

Adhikari also announced a slew of developmental measures for Falta, including the establishment of a women’s police station, recruitment of additional women personnel, a women’s college, and a fire brigade station. He claimed that Falta would be developed into a model constituency, though such plans would depend on the state government’s approval and funding.

Jahangir Khan gained notoriety during the election season when he compared himself to the protagonist of the Telugu blockbuster ‘Pushpa’ while responding to an IPS officer from Uttar Pradesh. His criminal record and the manner of his arrest—he was allegedly paraded on the streets with his hands tied, a video of which went viral—have sparked debates over police methods and the rule of law. Authorities have defended the parade as part of lawful investigation.

As the situation in Falta returns to normal, police maintain a strong presence, and further arrests are likely. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges of maintaining law and order in the region, where local power dynamics often intersect with political rivalries.
