Drug Gangs Exploit Maoist Decline: Telangana DGP Calls for Unified Anti-Narcotics Action
Telangana's Director General of Police, C. V. Anand, has warned of a surge in inter-State ganja smuggling gangs operating from forest-fringe areas in neighbouring States, following the decline of the Maoist movement. Addressing the media in Khammam on Tuesday, the DGP stressed the need for coordinated action to combat the drug menace and protect future generations.
Mr. Anand highlighted that the EAGLE, Telangana's Anti-Narcotic Task Force, must work in closer coordination with district police to dismantle smuggling networks operating through Khammam district, which serves as a gateway to the State. He noted that Maoists had previously targeted ganja (cannabis) cultivators in forested regions, but with their reduced influence, inter-State gangs have expanded operations.
Describing ganja peddlers as 'more dangerous than Maoists,' the DGP called for a unified effort involving law enforcement agencies and all sections of society to curb the rapidly spreading drug menace. He emphasised that the current situation demands immediate and collective action to safeguard the youth from narcotics.
