Drone spotted over Kerala's Viyoor Central Jail, probe launched

An investigation has been initiated after a drone was observed flying over Viyoor Central Jail in Kerala during the early hours of Friday, June 26, 2026, according to official sources.

Security personnel reported seeing the drone hovering over the jail premises multiple times between midnight and 2 a.m. The unmanned aerial vehicle was also sighted near the adjacent Fire and Rescue Services Academy and a college campus.

Prison department officials promptly alerted the police, who have launched a probe into the incident. The Viyoor Central Jail is classified as a sensitive installation, as it houses high-security prisoners, including several individuals accused in terrorism-related cases.

Flying drones in the vicinity of the jail is strictly prohibited. Authorities at the Viyoor police station stated that a formal case will be registered following a preliminary inquiry.

Investigators are exploring multiple possibilities, including the theory that the drone may have been operated to create content for social media platforms. However, all potential angles are being examined.

The State Special Branch, the intelligence wing of the Kerala Police, is also gathering information related to the incident, officials added.
