Dharmendra Pradhan's Resignation: Political Accountability, Not Diminished Clout in Odisha
Dharmendra Pradhan, the former Union Education Minister, resigned amid nationwide protests over the NEET paper leak. This development has sparked discussions about his political future and the BJP's dynamics in Odisha. However, party insiders and political analysts suggest that his standing within the state BJP remains strong.
Pradhan, 57, is one of the few Odia leaders who have risen to prominence in national politics. Within the Odisha BJP, he is considered a key figure who has helped expand the party's presence since 2014. His efforts were instrumental in the BJP's victory in the 2024 Odisha Assembly elections.
A senior BJP leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that Pradhan's resignation is an act of political accountability, not a reflection of diminished standing. The leader noted that BJP national president Nitin Nabin, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and other senior leaders endorsed Pradhan's reforms in the education sector, indicating continued support from the top brass.
The Opposition has framed the resignation differently. Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president Naveen Patnaik called it a “victory for Gen Z,” emphasizing accountability and public opinion. Patnaik wrote on X that “nobody is above the will of the people” and that the youth's voices deserve to be heard.
Within the Odisha BJP, Pradhan's influence is evident. Party sources say a majority of the BJP's 78 MLAs are considered loyal to Pradhan, and nearly 40% of the state's 16-member Cabinet is aligned with him. A BJP leader remarked that Pradhan has a hold over 147 assembly constituencies, unmatched by any other leader in the state.
During the protests, Pradhan received support from many BJP MPs and state ministers. BJP MP Bhartruhari Mahtab, along with 11 other BJP MPs from Odisha, criticized the BJD and Patnaik for demanding Pradhan's resignation. Odisha Cabinet minister Prithiviraj Harichandan also expressed support.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi and state BJP president Manmohan Samal, who had remained silent during the protests, later extended solidarity with Pradhan after his resignation. Samal praised Pradhan's integrity and administrative acumen, calling his sacrifice an example.
Pradhan's role in the BJP's future remains unclear, but party sources rule out his sidelining. His ability to bring leaders from other parties into the BJP fold and his grassroots connections are seen as assets that the party is unlikely to discard.
