Delimitation Bill: Congress Denies BJP-DMK Alliance Rumours as Stalin Considers Stand
Amid growing speculation about a possible political realignment in Tamil Nadu, the Congress party has categorically rejected rumours of a Bharatiya Janata Party-Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam alliance. The buzz, which has been circulating in political circles for weeks, suggests that the BJP is attempting to lure the DMK away from the opposition INDIA bloc ahead of the crucial delimitation bill.
Sources within the Congress told this publication that there is 'no truth whatsoever' to the claims. 'The DMK is a committed partner of the INDIA alliance and has stood firm on constitutional values. Such rumours are baseless and appear to be a deliberate attempt to create confusion,' a senior Congress leader said on condition of anonymity.
The speculation coincides with DMK president M.K. Stalin's deliberation on the delimitation bill, which is expected to be tabled in Parliament soon. Delimitation – the process of redrawing constituency boundaries based on population changes – has long been a contentious issue in southern states, which fear a loss of parliamentary representation due to slower population growth compared to northern states.
Stalin has convened a meeting of DMK’s key strategists and legal experts later this week to finalise the party's stance. While the DMK has historically opposed any delimitation that does not account for federal principles, sources indicate that Stalin is weighing options, including conditional support if certain safeguards are included.
Political analysts note that the BJP, which has been making concerted efforts to expand its footprint in Tamil Nadu, would gain significantly if it manages to split the DMK from the opposition. However, the DMK's ideological roots in Dravidian politics and its longstanding alliance with the Congress make such a shift unlikely in the near term.
The Congress’s swift denial also signals its intent to hold the INDIA bloc together. With the 2024 general elections looming, any crack in the opposition unity could prove costly. The party has urged the DMK to publicly clarify its position to dispel the 'misinformation campaign.'
As the debate over delimitation intensifies, the political landscape in Tamil Nadu remains fluid. The DMK’s final decision on the bill will be closely watched, as it could have far-reaching implications for the federal structure and the balance of power in Parliament.
