Delhi Zoo celebrates birth of three Asiatic lion cubs, boosting conservation efforts

The National Zoological Park in Delhi welcomed three Asiatic lion cubs on Tuesday, July 7, marking the second successful litter for breeding pair Mahagauri and Maheshwar in two years. The cubs, now three days old, are being cared for in a secure maternity enclosure away from public view, where they are bonding with their mother.

Zoo officials are using a hands-off approach to minimise disturbance, relying on round-the-clock CCTV surveillance to monitor the family. Intervention occurs only in case of medical emergencies, ensuring a calm environment crucial for the cubs' early development.

The births are significant for the zoo, which had not recorded an Asiatic lion birth in nearly 16 years before Mahagauri's first litter in 2025. The previous successful birth occurred in 2009. The Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica) is classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with a single wild population in Gujarat's Gir Forest.

In an official statement on Friday, the zoo emphasised that the cubs and their mother are receiving optimal care. The successful breeding of this pair contributes to the global conservation efforts for the species, which faces threats from habitat loss and disease.

The zoo has not yet announced when the cubs will be visible to the public. For now, they remain under constant but unobtrusive observation to ensure their health and safety.
