Delhi to Regulate Coaching Centres After Deadly UP Fire, Warns of Sealing
The Delhi government has announced it will formulate a new law to regulate all coaching centres in the national capital, following a fire that killed 15 people at a coaching centre in Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow last week. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta issued the statement in a video message on Saturday, emphasising that the safety of students is paramount.
Gupta warned that coaching centres failing to comply with security and fire safety norms within one month will face immediate sealing. 'One month. There is a time period of one month. All the coaching institutes running in Delhi, be it 900 or 1000, the number doesn't matter—what matters is the lives of the children studying there, their safety and security,' she said.
The announcement comes days after a fire broke out at a three-storey building housing a coaching centre in Aliganj, Lucknow, on Monday, claiming 15 lives. The incident has raised concerns about safety standards in such institutes across the country.
The proposed law aims to ensure compliance with building codes, fire safety equipment, and emergency exits. The Delhi government has not yet released details of the draft legislation but said it will be presented to the assembly soon.
