Delhi schools launch year-long campaign to combat air pollution through student-led awareness

The Delhi government has directed all schools under its jurisdiction to conduct a year-long series of awareness activities focused on the sources and impact of air pollution, according to an official circular from the education department.

The initiative aims to foster environmentally responsible behaviour among students and support ongoing efforts to improve air quality in the national capital, which frequently ranks among the world's most polluted cities.

Starting this month, schools will organise activities such as poster-making, slogan writing, essay and speech competitions, and street plays. These programmes will highlight major contributors to air pollution, including vehicular emissions, road dust, and construction activities.

Students from Classes 6 to 12 will participate in most activities, while some events will involve students from all grades, the circular stated.

Delhi's air quality often deteriorates to hazardous levels during winter months due to a combination of local emissions, dust, and seasonal factors such as stubble burning in neighbouring states. The awareness campaign is part of a broader strategy to mitigate pollution through behavioural change and public engagement.

The circular did not specify penalties for non-compliance but emphasised the importance of integrating environmental consciousness into school culture. Schools are expected to report on the activities conducted.

Education experts welcomed the move, noting that early education on environmental issues can have long-term benefits. However, some stressed the need for corresponding actions to address structural causes of pollution, such as industrial emissions and waste burning.
