Delhi High Court Rules: OpenAI's AI Training on Copyrighted Content Not Infringement

The Delhi High Court has ruled that OpenAI's use of copyrighted works to train its artificial intelligence models does not constitute copyright infringement. The court further held that granting an injunction against OpenAI would cause irreparable harm not only to the company but also to the public at large.

The case, filed in 2024 by the Indian news agency ANI Media Pvt Ltd, was the first of its kind in an Indian court. ANI alleged that OpenAI, the developer of the ChatGPT series of generative AI models, infringed its copyright by using ANI's content to train its large language models.

OpenAI, headquartered in San Francisco, is a leading AI research organization. The court's decision marks a significant precedent in India regarding the legality of using copyrighted material for AI training purposes.
