Delhi Government Revises Slum Rehabilitation Cut-off Date, 20 Lakh Residents to Benefit
The Delhi government on Tuesday approved a revised cut-off date for the rehabilitation of residents living in unauthorised jhuggi-jhopdi (JJ) clusters, moving the eligibility date from January 1, 2015, to January 1, 2025. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
According to an official release, the change will extend eligibility for permanent housing to an estimated 4-5 lakh families, or nearly 20 lakh people, living in JJ clusters across the national capital. The policy, officially named the Delhi Slum and JJ Cluster Rehabilitation and Relocation Policy, 2026, is yet to be notified.
The government is also considering provisions to include members of the same family living in separate units within a slum structure under the rehabilitation framework, subject to the payment of prescribed charges.
Under the policy, eligible families will be relocated to multi-storey flats with civic amenities. The Chief Minister stated that efforts would be made to rehabilitate beneficiaries within or near their existing settlements, in line with the Delhi government's 'Jahan Jhuggi Wahan Makkan' scheme.
