Jharkhand Student Protest Enters 15th Day, Government Invites Another Faction for Talks

The students' protest over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations in Jharkhand entered its 15th day on Saturday (August 8, 2026), with no resolution in sight after a meeting between student leaders and state government ministers failed to break the deadlock. The protest, organized under the banner of the JPSS-JSCC Reform Manch, has been demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the alleged irregularities in recruitment exams for government posts.

The agitation, which began on July 25, has seen a large number of job aspirants from across the state gather at the protest site in Ranchi. Their demands also include a time-bound recruitment process, transparency in examinations, and action against those responsible for alleged malpractices. On Friday (August 7, 2026), a delegation of the Jharkhand government, comprising ministers, held a two-hour-long meeting with student representatives in the state capital. Student leader Ravindra Paswan said, "It was the first round of meeting with the government and the government listened to our demands. However, we could not reach any conclusion regarding our key demands. Therefore, the protest will continue for the time being."

Meanwhile, the government has invited another group, the Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM), for talks on Saturday. A seven-member delegation of the JLKM is expected to meet the committee formed by the government to look into the allegations of irregularities in competitive exams. This move suggests the government is attempting to engage with a broader spectrum of protesters, though it remains unclear whether this will lead to a breakthrough.

The prolonged standoff underscores the deep mistrust between the student community and the state administration. The demand for a CBI inquiry reflects the students' lack of confidence in the existing mechanisms to investigate the matter impartially. The government's decision to form a committee and hold talks indicates a willingness to address the concerns, but the failure to reach a consensus on key demands suggests that the path to resolution remains challenging.

As the protest enters its second fortnight, pressure is mounting on both sides to find a mutually acceptable solution.
