Delhi Building Collapse: Six Dead, Rescue Underway, Adjacent Structure Evacuated
A five-storey building collapsed in Satya Niketan, southwest Delhi, on Sunday, killing six people and leaving several others feared trapped. The structure, over 40 years old, was used as a paying guest accommodation and housed mostly students from nearby colleges of the University of Delhi's South Campus.
Rescue operations continued through the night and into Monday morning, with teams working to locate survivors. Officials said thirteen people have been pulled alive from the rubble, but the search is still on. The building gave way during basement repair work, they added.
The task of clearing the debris has been complicated by concerns over the stability of an adjacent five-storey building. According to sources, that structure was built without pillars, using an older method that joins bricks directly together. Its condition does not inspire enough confidence for workers to proceed at full pace.
As a precaution, authorities evacuated residents of the adjacent building. They are now installing a support system to stabilise it before removal of debris can continue. The neighbourhood, densely packed with multi-storey homes converted into paying guest lodgings, has long faced concerns about structural safety.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has ordered a magisterial investigation into the collapse. The police have registered a case against the building owner, Hariram, and others. All the accused are reported to be absconding.
The collapse has once again highlighted the vulnerability of old buildings in the city, especially those modified for commercial use. Local residents expressed fear about the integrity of their own properties, with many demanding a structural audit of similar structures in the area.
Officials said rescue teams are taking all precautions to avoid further damage to adjoining properties. The operation is expected to continue until all trapped persons are accounted for. A case of culpable homicide is likely to be added based on the investigation findings, police indicated.
