Dehradun Schools Shut as Heavy Rain Alert Triggers Precautionary Holiday
The Dehradun district administration has declared a one-day holiday for all schools and Anganwadi centres on Wednesday, following a forecast of heavy rainfall by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The order applies to all government and private schools from Classes 1 to 12, as well as all Anganwadi centres across the district.
The decision was taken by the District Magistrate and the District Disaster Management Authority as a precautionary measure, according to the Press Trust of India. An orange alert had been issued by the IMD for the district, indicating the likelihood of severe weather conditions.
In view of the prevailing weather, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Wednesday directed the Secretary of Disaster Management to remain on high alert. He also instructed the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and all district administrations to maintain maximum vigilance and be prepared for immediate relief and rescue operations in the event of an emergency.
The Chief Minister issued an appeal to residents and tourists to exercise utmost caution. He urged people to avoid unnecessary travel and undertake journeys only if absolutely essential. The state government has also advised people to stay away from rivers, streams, and other vulnerable areas, and to strictly adhere to all advisories and instructions issued by local authorities.
Additionally, Dhami directed that a damaged road be repaired on a priority basis to ensure safe and smooth connectivity for villagers. He asked officials to assess the ground situation and take all necessary measures required for restoration work.
To ensure strict compliance with the closure order, instructions have been issued to the Chief Education Officer and the District Programme Officer. The district administration has stated that the precautionary closure is aimed at preventing any untoward incident in view of the weather forecast.
