Deadly Russian Strikes Hit Kyiv Ahead of NATO Summit
At least nine people were killed and 46 injured in Russian missile strikes on Kyiv, Ukrainian officials said on Monday. The attack, the second on the capital in a week, occurred on the eve of a NATO summit in Turkey where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to meet US President Donald Trump.
Kyiv's top military administrator, Timur Tkachenko, confirmed the casualties, adding that at least five children were among the injured. Rescuers are searching for survivors under the rubble of damaged apartment blocks.
Mayor Vitaly Klitschko reported that Russian ballistic missiles struck several buildings, sparking fires in some apartment complexes. Warehouses and a garage workshop were also damaged, he said.
In a televised address hours before the strikes, Zelensky warned that Moscow was preparing a second "massive strike" on Kyiv following attacks on Thursday that killed 30 people. He said intelligence indicated a fresh wave of attacks was imminent.
Photographs from Kyiv showed smouldering wreckage and charred cars. Emergency crews continued to comb through debris on Monday morning.
Ukraine accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilian areas. Russia said it had struck military and energy facilities in retaliation for recent Ukrainian attacks on power stations and energy infrastructure on Russian territory.
The NATO summit in Turkey is expected to focus on military aid to Ukraine. Zelensky has urged allies to supply long-range missiles and grant licences to manufacture Patriot defence missiles. "Any delay with missiles for our air defense... means the loss of lives, and it encourages Russia to continue the war," he wrote on social media.
The strikes came after a night of drone and missile attacks on Thursday which forced tens of thousands of residents to evacuate to metro stations. Meanwhile, in Russian-occupied Crimea, the city of Sevastopol experienced temporary power cuts due to ongoing attacks.
