Congress Takes Swipe at Modi After Indonesia Award, Points to Nehru's Posthumous Honour
The Congress party on Tuesday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he was conferred with Indonesia's highest honour, the 'Bintang Adipurna of the Republic of Indonesia' medal. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh noted that India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, had received the same award posthumously without having to 'wrangle' for it.
Mr. Modi was presented the medal by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto for his role in strengthening bilateral ties. He is the second Indian leader after Nehru to receive this honour.
Responding to a social media post highlighting this, Mr. Ramesh said on X: 'And Nehru got it posthumously without having to wrangle it.'
In a statement, Mr. Modi said the honour belongs to the people of India and reflects the historic ties between the two nations. He thanked President Prabowo and the Indonesian government.
The Bintang Adipurna, instituted in 1959, is Indonesia's highest civilian award, given to individuals who have rendered exceptional service to the unity, continuity, and prosperity of the Republic of Indonesia.
