Congress demands Supreme Court judge-led probe into alleged land purchases by MP CM Mohan Yadav's family
The Congress party on Tuesday demanded a high-level investigation by a committee headed by a Supreme Court judge into allegations that Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav's family members purchased land in areas where infrastructure projects were later announced.
A report by an English daily, citing government land records, claimed that the Chief Minister's wife, son, daughter-in-law, and other extended family members bought 168 acres of land through 137 plots in and around Ujjain between December 2023, when Mr. Yadav became Chief Minister, and December 2025. The purchases were made either directly or through four real estate companies owned by them, the report said. It further claimed that most of these purchases were in areas where government road projects were planned, or where the Ujjain Master Plan 2035 proposes converting agricultural land into residential or commercial properties.
The report also stated that since 2021, when Mr. Yadav became a state minister, his family has acquired a total of 253 acres of land. The family has long been involved in the real estate business in and around Ujjain. Mr. Yadav is a three-term MLA from Ujjain-South and previously served as chairperson of the Ujjain Development Authority (2004–2010) and the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (2011–2013).
Leader of Opposition in the state assembly, Umang Singhar, told a press conference in Bhopal that land prices were increased in a “well planned manner” by bringing projects to those areas, and that land was purchased before the projects were announced. He said, “Certainly, the Chief Minister will say that ‘everything happened as per rules and law, and that we file the income tax’. But our demand is that a Supreme Court judge should investigate this by forming a committee.” He added that the probe would reveal those linked to the matter and who benefited. Singhar also alleged that corruption amounting to crores of rupees was occurring in Ujjain in connection with the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, 2028, and that similar irregularities and land scams had taken place in Indore and other projects.
Congress national general secretary K.C. Venugopal criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP, questioning why central agencies like the Enforcement Directorate or the Central Bureau of Investigation have not investigated Mr. Yadav. “PM Modi, why have ED-CBI not knocked on the doors of MP CM Mohan Yadav? Is a 253 acre mega land scam not grounds enough to chase him and punish him for his crimes?” he said, accusing the ruling party of misusing investigative agencies against opposition leaders while failing to act against its own. “A regime that is hyperactive to misuse investigative agencies to hound Opposition leaders to settle political scores, or to coerce them into joining their alliance, is now in deep slumber while their own chosen lieutenants loot public wealth,” Venugopal wrote on X.
The Chief Minister has not yet responded to the allegations.
