Coastal Karnataka on Red Alert: IMD Warns of Extremely Heavy Rainfall on July 2-3

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for coastal Karnataka, predicting extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204.5 mm on July 2 and July 3. The warning remains in effect until 8.30 a.m. on July 3.

According to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), coastal Karnataka recorded 53 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on July 1, compared to the normal average of 41 mm for the same period. This marks a 29% increase from the usual levels.

District-wise, Dakshina Kannada received 67.3 mm (against a normal of 44.1 mm), Udupi recorded 75.5 mm (normal 49.7 mm), and Uttara Kannada saw 39.2 mm (normal 36.8 mm).

Among specific locations, Mulky in Dakshina Kannada recorded the highest rainfall at 199.5 mm, followed by Hejamady in Udupi district with 180.5 mm, and Salkod in Uttara Kannada with 129 mm. In Mangaluru, the Pandeshwar Fire Station area received 140 mm of rainfall.

The red alert indicates a high likelihood of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, which may lead to waterlogging, landslides, and disruption of normal life. Residents in low-lying areas have been advised to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities.
