CJI Surya Kant: Court infrastructure essential, not a luxury, for justice
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Saturday stated that judicial infrastructure is not a luxury but an essential component of the justice delivery system. He made the remarks while inaugurating a multi-level parking facility at the District Courts Complex in Sector 43, Chandigarh.
The CJI emphasised that a lawyer worried about finding parking cannot be expected to argue a case, cross-examine a witness, or draft pleadings with full concentration. He called for strengthening judicial infrastructure at district and sub-divisional courts, particularly in view of rising litigation and judicial appointments.
Referring to Chandigarh as his 'karmabhoomi', the Chief Justice noted that while Hisar is his birthplace, Chandigarh holds a special place as the city where he began his legal career. 'My journey from struggle to success began in the streets of this city. Whatever I have achieved is because of the support, cooperation, guidance, and mentorship of my friends and colleagues here,' he added.
The newly inaugurated parking facility can accommodate 1,200 cars and 500 two-wheelers, addressing a long-standing need for litigants and lawyers. The CJI urged both the Punjab and Haryana governments to prioritise similar infrastructure upgrades in other court complexes.
