Christian Medical College Vellore Recognised as Centre of Excellence for Diabetes by International Diabetes Federation
Vellore's Christian Medical College (CMC) has been awarded the status of Centre of Excellence by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) for its Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. The recognition was announced through a press release from the institution.
The IDF Centre of Excellence designation is granted after a thorough assessment of a facility's capacity in education, training, patient care, outreach, and research. According to CMC, the award acknowledges the cumulative efforts and substantial contributions of the department's members over the past 25 years.
With this recognition, CMC now holds the distinction of being both an IDF Centre of Excellence in Diabetes Care and an Indian Council of Medical Research Collaborating Centre of Excellence (ICMR-CCoE) for Diabetes. This dual recognition highlights the institution's sustained commitment to advancing diabetes care and research.
In its statement, CMC expressed gratitude to all stakeholders, including well-wishers, collaborators, faculty, students, educators, laboratory personnel, and pharmacists, for their role in achieving this milestone. The hospital did not provide details on the specific benefits or funding associated with the IDF designation.
The IDF is a global umbrella organisation of over 240 national diabetes associations in more than 160 countries. Its Centre of Excellence programme aims to recognise and promote institutions that demonstrate high standards in diabetes management, education, and research. The recognition is part of efforts to improve diabetes care worldwide, particularly in regions with a high burden of the disease.
India has one of the largest populations of people living with diabetes, making such centres critical for public health. CMC's achievement is seen as a significant endorsement of its work in endocrinology and diabetes management.
